St. Anthony of Padua, the beloved miracle worker and one of the most popular saints in Christian history, was born into a wealthy family and by the age of fifteen asked to be sent to the Abbey of Santa Cruz to learn theology and Latin. After his ordination, Anthony joined the new Franciscan Order. He became a friend to Francis of Assisi. Anthony was known for his preaching and many miracles. Upon exhumation over 300 years after his death, his tongue was found to be totally incorrupt, so perfect were the teachings that had been formed upon it. Saint Anthony was canonized less than 1 year after his death and was declared Doctor of the Church. He is also known as the patron saint of lost and stolen articles.
